Did you know that April is foot awareness month? Show your sole some love this month…

A few reasons why we need to give our feet more than lip service - the human foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, 29 muscles and tendons. 25% of the bones in your body are in your feet and when those bones are out of alignment, so is the rest of your body. During an average day of walking, the forces on your feet can total hundreds of tons (as heavy as a loaded cement truck!). The average woman walks more than the average male (probably in heels no less) and she is four times more likely to have foot problems in her life. So, ladies...time to give your sole some love.

The first step in taking care of your feet is to exercise. Walking is great for your feet, especially in sand. I also like yoga for stretching. The balancing poses force your feet to work all the muscles you may not otherwise use. It’s important to keep your muscles, tendons and ligaments strong and limber since they keep the bones aligned. Why not try some foot exercises at home like toe curls (curl them under), toe splays (spread them apart) and big toe stretches (pull them back). And it’s always fun to use your toes to pick towels up off the ground. One of my favorite ways to relieve foot pain is by rolling a tennis ball across my arches.

On another note, the soles of your feet have more sweat glands and nerve endings per centimeter than any other part of your body. The sweat glands in the feet produce approximately a half pint of perspiration daily. Therefore, it’s important to buy shoes with real leather linings as they are much more breathable than shoes with synthetic linings.

With spring and summer coming up, it is also time to take care of the skin on our feet. Start with a foot bath of black tea which has tannic acid, a natural antibacterial. Use a pumice stone or foot file after your foot bath to remove dead skin and then apply a rich foot cream containing shea butter or cocoa butter. For stubborn callouses, use a balm with salicylic acid. There are also foot peeling masks in the form of a sock that you can wear while binge watching Netflix.
